VSBA Inclusive Schools Fund Seaholme PS

The Seaholme Primary School Outdoor Sensory Garden was designed as an inclusive, nature-based learning environment that supports student wellbeing, engagement and connection through thoughtful landscape design.

About

The Seaholme Primary School Outdoor Sensory Garden was designed as an inclusive, nature-based learning environment that supports student wellbeing, engagement and connection through thoughtful landscape design. Commissioned by the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA), the project was completed in 2025 as part of the school’s commitment to creating accessible and engaging outdoor spaces for all students.

The garden provides a sensory-rich environment that encourages exploration, learning and play while supporting the diverse needs of the school community. The design responds particularly to neurodivergent students, students with additional sensory needs and Koorie students through a considered approach that incorporates nature-based experiences, inclusive access and opportunities for connection with Country.

Through the integration of natural elements and child-centred design principles, the outdoor space creates a calm and supportive environment where students can engage with their surroundings, develop social connections and participate in informal learning experiences. The completed sensory garden enhances the school’s outdoor environment, fostering wellbeing, creativity and a stronger connection between students and nature.
